For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Scientific Technician/Technologist to provide basic technical support to scientists and senior technical personnel for chemistry activities in the High Explosives Application Facility (HEAF). You will work under supervision with principal investigators and scientific and technical staff to provide technical support of explosives research and programmatic/experimental activities in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner. This position is in the Energetic Materials Group within the Materials Science Division.
 
This position will be filled at either the 504.1 or 504.2 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Partner with scientists, engineers and high-level technical personnel to provide basic technical support to various programmatic tasks.
- Ensure effective operation and maintenance of instrumentation systems by following quality control requirements.
- Schedule and monitor vendor maintenance of instrumentation systems.
- Contribute to explosives research by providing basic technical support for explosive characterization activities.
- Document work in lab notebooks and report results.
- Perform work in accordance with documented safety guidelines and procedures and maintain general and specific ES&H and job-specific technical training.
- Work as an integral part of a results-oriented team on an ongoing basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 In Addition, at the 504.2 Level
- Partner with scientists, engineers and high-level technical personnel to provide general technical support to various moderately complex to complex programmatic tasks.
- Contribute to explosives research by providing general support for explosive characterization activities.
- Acquire and analyze basic data and keep laboratory notebook, prepare data summaries of results and identify problems.
 
Qualifications
- AA/AS in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or environmental technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Basic technical knowledge and an elementary understanding of chemistry and materials science and mechanical aptitude.
- Elementary understanding of chemicals and proper handling in a laboratory or field setting.
- Ability to acquire and maintain the necessary qualifications as an Explosives Handler.
- Ability to work both independently and in a diverse team environment with scientific and technical personnel and to provide leadership on projects.
- Ability to work effectively with an experimental team under conflicting and rigorous deadlines.
- Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. in a safe and controlled manner, climb a ladder, and wear a respirator as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 In Addition, at the 504.2 Level
- Ability to acquire and analyze basic data and maintain the necessary qualifications as an Explosives Handler.
- Ability to work both independently and in a diverse team environment with scientific and technical personnel and to provide leadership and training on moderately complex projects.
- Ability to perform work safely while working around hazardous materials such as high explosives following documented prodedures, while maintaining attention to detail during routine and repetitive actions.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of safety rules and procedures.
- Experience identifying and recommending solutions to technical problems using initiative and creativity with general supervision.
- Experience training and mentoring new staff.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
