We have an opening for an Analyst to conduct investigations in computational geomechanics, shock physics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational multiphase flow. You will analyze underground explosions, geomechanics, multiphase CFD and/or shock wave physics, and focus on theoretical and computational modeling of laboratory experiments and field studies. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division (AEED).
- Conduct original research in shock physics, geomechanical failure, particle communition and associated multiphase flow and organize and analyze data from research and field experiments.
- Perform moderately complex to complex large-scale simulations using a new generation of hydrodynamics, material strength, radiation transport, CFD, multiphase flow and multiphysics coupling codes.
- Publish research results in technical reports and present technical results as required to coordinate research with internal and external collaborators and sponsors.
- Work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a scientific team and interact with physicists, engineers, and geologists, to design and implement creative solutions to challenging research projects.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Provide solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
- Publish results in the peer reviewed literature
- Propose, contrive, and conduct high-level briefings to executive management and government sponsors, as well as major studies to substantiate programmatic goals.
- BS in mathematics, engineering, physics, or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Previous experience utilizing process innovative skills in order to address challenging scientific and/or technical problems by identifying/developing creative solutions.
- Previous experience devising innovative solutions to problems in mechanics, fluid dynamics, and/or geomechanics.
- Previous experience with one or more of shock physics, geological material models, and/or multiphase flow.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience using computational tools and techniques to perform analysis (potentially including finite-element/finite difference codes, or hydrodynamic codes).
- Ability to incorporate creativity, physical insight, and breadth of understanding in applications of moderately complex physical processes.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate and present and explain technical information in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Ability to travel to present experimental and field study results and engage with sponsoring organizations.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- PhD or equivalent related experience in engineering, physics, or a related field. or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience conducting research in a specific area of science related to shock physics in porous materials/geomaterials, or geomechanics/geotechnical applications and multiphase flow.
- Significant experience providing solutions to complex scientific and/or technical problems that require in-depth analysis.
- Experience running parallel software and knowledge of scripting languages.
- Experience with Machine learning and/or data analytics.
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
