We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in applied polymer chemistry and play a major role in conceiving of new multicomponent polymeric materials, developing ideas into useful materials, and producing the materials at scale for end users. You will have extensive collaboration with physicists and engineers engaged in device design, fundamental scientific measurements, and nuclear nonproliferation studies. This position is in the Advanced Materials Synthesis group within the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Formulate, synthesize, and characterize multicomponent polymeric materials.
- Apply molecular structure-function relationships to produce new materials with advanced properties.
- Perform synthetic operations on both organic and inorganic polymers as well as small molecules.
- Evaluate and troubleshoot defect formation in polymer composite materials.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document and analyze data, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and disseminate key results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: organic or inorganic chemistry, polymer science, polymer engineering, synthetic chemistry.
- Experience with bulk free-radical polymerization and/or addition polymerization.
- Ability to think independently, plan and execute applied research, interpret data, and communicate results.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by presentations at seminars or conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with a desire to work in applied research and in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with evaluating reaction kinetics.
- Experience with air- and moisture-sensitive chemical reactions.
- Experience with characterization techniques such as ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, fluorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform Infrared, graphics processing clusters, differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
