We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of advanced tokamak plasma physics for magnetic-fusion-energy. The research aims to develop a predictive understanding of fully non-inductive, high-beta operating scenarios by performing joint experiments and modeling on the EAST tokamak in Hefei, China, and the DIII-D tokamak in San Diego, U.S.A. This position is in the Physics Division.
The work location for this assignment will be in San Diego, California.
- Perform predictive integrated modeling of EAST and DIII-D steady-state scenario discharges to help guide experiments.
- Support the design, implementation, analysis, and modeling of steady-state scenario experiments on EAST and DIII-D, with 50% effort on each of the two devices. This will typically include 1 or 2 trips to China per year of length 1-2 weeks each, in addition to occasional participation using a remote-control room located in San Diego.
- Participate in the ongoing analysis and modeling tools for EAST, in collaboration with EAST colleagues and/or other U.S.-based institutions.
-Work with collaborators on both devices to design and carry out experiments exploring the optimization of high beta, fully non-inductive operation with enhanced energy confinement, compatible with boundary requirements, that projects to a future reactor.
- Compare experimental results to physics models to identify needed model improvements, missing physics, or benchmark/validate models.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ESH&Q, Security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in physics or a related field.
- Knowledge of basic plasma physics, tokamak operation, equilibrium, stability, transport, NBI and RF heating and current drive.
- Experience carrying out experiments in magnetically confined plasma devices.
- Experience carrying out modeling of magnetically confined plasmas, especially equilibrium, transport, stability, and current drive.
- Experience writing software to develop plasma modeling tools and with data analysis programming language, such as IDL, Python, or MatLab.
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical and scientific reports and publications, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Experience working independently and in a team environment to achieve program goals in a timely fashion.
- Experience carrying out core plasma physics experiments in a large tokamak.
- Experience with codes commonly used to model tokamaks or interpret their data, e.g. EFIT, DCON, TRANSP, GENRAY/CQL3D.
- Experience collaborating with theorists and diagnosticians.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
