We have multiple openings for Machine Tool Repairers. You will be responsible for installing, testing, repairing, maintaining, or modifying basic mechanical and hydraulic systems on machine tools and related equipment in support of LLNL programs. You will have close interactions with technical and supervisory personnel throughout the Laboratory. You may receive work assignments located at various locations, including Livermore and Site 300. These positions are in the Mechanical Manufacturing Group of the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either the 983.1 or 983.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
- Design, fabricate, install, test, repair, troubleshoot, maintain, or modify mechanical and hydraulic systems to improve the operation, reliability, and/or safety of LLNL’s machine tools.
- Operate a variety of machine tools under job conditions to detect/diagnose malfunctions, or to reproduce parts.
- Install and/or relocate machine tools and related equipment.
- Use hand and powered tools that are typically used to maintain machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems, including diagnostic equipment (such as levels, straight edges, records, and ball bars).
- Solve fundamental problems and make minimal decisions.
- Document assignment specific, trade related information routinely as required.
- May work in areas with radioactive, toxic, or high explosives materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 983.2 Level
- Solve moderately complex technical problems and make limited decisions.
- Utilize intermediate to advanced mechanical skills.
- Responsible for installing, testing, repairing, maintaining, or modifying moderately complex mechanical and hydraulic systems on machine tools and related equipment in support of LLNL Programs.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent basic Journey level education and related experience (i.e., completion of an apprenticeship program or equivalent level of education/experience).
- Basic level of experience using general hand and powered tools that are typically used to maintain machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems, including basic diagnostic equipment with basic applications (e.g., electronic levels, auto-collimators, straight edges, recorders, and ball bars).
- Experience testing, installing, repairing, and maintaining basic machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals. Understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics.
- Knowledge of applicable OSHA and ES&H regulations.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license with the ability to operate common motor vehicles including a 32000 lb. fork truck.
- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
In Addition at the 983.2 Level
- Intermediate to advanced journey level education and related experience equivalent to completion of an Associate degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology plus an apprenticeship program in a related discipline.
- Intermediate to advanced journey level experience testing, repairing, and maintaining moderately complex mechanical and hydraulic systems, machine tools, and related systems. Thorough knowledge of applicable codes, OSHA, and ES&H regulations.
- Intermediate to advanced skills and experience using hand and powered tools that are typically used to maintain machine tool mechanical and hydraulic systems, including advanced diagnostic equipment with advanced applications (e.g., electronic levels, auto-collimators, straight edges, recorders, and ball bars).
- Associate degree in Mechanical Technology.
- Experience with machine controllers and troubleshooting of associated servo systems.
- Familiarity with the electrical construction trade.
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
