We have multiple openings for Computer Scientists, Engineers, or Operations Research Analysts with a background in network analysis and/or RF communications for application to modeling and simulation of large wired and wireless communications networks. You will join a team of experts developing the next generation discrete event communications simulation that will push the envelope of extreme-parallel discrete event simulation technology running on high-performance distributed computing systems. Your contributions in the simulator development will be used to protect vital national security interests and facilitate the development and deployment of next generation communications networks and beyond. These positions are in the Global Security Computing Applications Division within the Computing Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
- Develop new models that will enable the simulation of large-scale wireless networks, including new features in a variety of important scenarios.
- Leverage current ns-3 modeling and simulation capabilities for analyzing 3G/4G/LTE and 5G technology.
- Build simulations, leveraging LLNL’s HPC capability to assess interoperability of the commercial wireless network and government assets.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in the areas of modeling and simulation, critical infrastructure cyber security, information security, and network security to continue building LLNL’s modeling and simulation capability.
- Pursue program development and growth opportunities by co-authoring proposals and proposing ideas that will address sponsor needs.
- Present results and provide subject matter expertise across multi-discipline projects, engaging with sponsors on a regular basis.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant software engineering experience in C or C++.
- Significant experience working with modeling and simulation tools such as ns-3, OPNET, or OMNET++.
- Advanced knowledge of and/or experience in communications systems, including TCP/IP, LTE/5G, GSM, CDMA or Wi-Fi.
- Significant experience in communication network protocols (protocol development, parsing, and/or reverse engineering).
- Significant experience in secure protocols, software defined networks, rf systems modeling, or digital signal processing.
- Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with contending priorities, as well as approach difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity to change focus when necessary.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate comprehensive knowledge effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and to non-cyber experts and the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Highly advanced software engineering experience and advanced knowledge of and experience in modeling and simulation or communications.
- Highly advanced project leadership experience and ability to work independently while effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.
- Substantial experience writing research proposals and securing sponsor funding, with advanced interpersonal, verbal, and written skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
- Experience with the network simulator ns-3.
- Knowledge of one or more of the following computer science disciplines: networking, communications theory, parallel programming, high performance computing, systems programming, and software engineering.
- Knowledge of one or more the following wireless communications disciplines: ns-3 simulator, RF propagation modeling, RF interference modeling, antenna modeling, wireless communications protocols, error modeling, multiple access protocols.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
