The Material Sciences Division (MSD) in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform scientific research in a National Laboratory setting. You will engage with a multi-disciplinary team applying computational, analytical, and experimental approaches to investigate the fundamental chemical and physical processes that can influence the chemical behavior of radionuclides resulting from a nuclear detonation and/or shock driven reaction in energetic materials. This position is in the Macroscopic Modeling team within the Reaction Dynamics Group.
- Conduct fundamental research using state of the art modeling techniques to span both length and time scales in the range between plasma and chemical explosive modeling, interpret experimental results, and guide experimental design when appropriate.
- Use 2D and 3D Finite Element Analysis tools to explore the influence and magnitude of environmental effects on the evolution of a nuclear explosion including formation of debris and debris chemistry.
- Develop fundamental reaction mechanisms for defined problems and/or apply known reaction mechanism into simulations.
- Participate in development and testing of new approaches to elucidate the condensation behavior of a cooling plasma.
- Perform and/or interpret compositional analyses of samples or modeling relevant to formation processes.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent, complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals. Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering or related fields.
- Experience in setting up and performing hydrodynamic simulations for the design and/or interpretation of experiments.
- Experience either using computational modeling tools or programming languages to interpret experimental datasets.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in well-written published papers and effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experience in conceiving and implementing numerical methods in a high-level language (e.g., Fortran, C++, other) for highly parallel codes, and experience in using scripting languages (e.g., Perl, Python, other) for automation and analysis.
- Experience in algorithmic development within a large software suite.
- Knowledge of shock wave physics and experience in implementing known reaction mechanisms into hydrodynamic simulations.

Security Clearance: This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance; we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
