LLNL’s Optical Fiber Laser Group is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to participate in the research and development of fiber-based lasers and sensors.  You will work with high power diode-pumped lasers, collaborating with engineering and physics colleagues., You will also partner with other  members of the Fiber Group to design, develop, and test advanced fibers and fiber-based lasers, in support of Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Defense (DOD)-based missions.  This position is in the DOD Technologies Program (DODT) of the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF & PS) Directorate. 

Essential Duties
- Plan and execute laboratory experiments to advance understanding of fiber-based lasers and their power scaling.
- Team with LLNL scientists to design, build, and test novel fibers for lasers and sensors.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of researchers internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Work within a dynamic team to collaborate resources, plan experimental campaigns, and document research.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals, and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in Optical Fiber, Lasers, Optics, Optoelectronics, or related field or discipline.
- Experience in conducting laboratory experiments in one or more of the following areas: laser beam combination, diode-pumped fiber and solid-state lasers, nonlinear optics, ultrafast laser spectroscopy, optoelectronic devices.
- Knowledge of and experience with optical fiber, laser science and optics, and/or basic statistics as it applies to the design of experiments and data analysis.
- Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Experience developing independent research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with laser sources, with emphasis on optical fiber-based lasers.


Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
