We have an opening for a Nuclear Diagnostician to support Global Security’s Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) and Nuclear Counter Terrorism and Counter Proliferation (NCTCP) Programs. You will work as part of a dynamic and diverse team to provide computational and modeling support to the NEST research efforts and operations. You will be required to work at LLNL in Livermore, and travel to offsite locations and facilities. This position will report programmatically to the NEST Nuclear Diagnostics Lead and administratively to the Nondestructive Evaluation Group (NDE) within the Materials Engineering Division (MED).
- Model radiation detector responses of nuclear systems and communicate results to experts and non-experts in this field.
- Perform experiments and interpret results to validate existing models and build new detector models and response functions.
- Participate in measurement and training campaigns employing significant quantities of nuclear material in subcritical experiments and benchmarks.
- Train non-expert emergency response personnel on diagnostic tools within the context of their operational procedures.
- Under limited direction effectively manage concurrent technical projects with competing priorities in a multi-disciplinary team environment, ensuring commitments and deadlines met are important to project success.
- Provide diagnostic support to various programmatic tasks in collaboration with scientist, engineers, technicians.
- Travel domestically and internationally up to 25% time, for support and customer interaction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree in nuclear engineering, relevant scientific discipline (nuclear physics, particle physics, radiochemistry), or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Relevant experience programming in C, C++, Python, or related languages.
- Experience in the application of statistics and/or machine learning to data interpretation and analysis.
- Broad understanding of non-destructive analysis techniques, nuclear spectroscopy, Feynman variance-to-mean analysis, or other analytical methods and techniques.
- Experience with radiation detection equipment and interpretation of particle interactions in diverse materials and environments.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in an interdisciplinary team environment and present technical information to external sponsors and customers.
- Ability to devise solutions for unique and complex problems in situations that may not be well defined.
- Ability to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests and in collaboration with a variety multidisciplinary teams and external organizations.
- Prior experience working with nuclear material and radiation safety techniques.
- Prior experience working with particle transport codes such as GEANT or MCNP.
- Prior experience working in an emergency response environment at the state or local level, or within Federal agencies such as: DoD, DoJ, or DHS.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
