For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Mechanical Technologist/Sr. Mechanical Technologist.  You will support research and development efforts in support of Weapons Complex Integration (WCI) radiography missions.  Occasional travel and overtime may be required.  This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the 533.2 or 533.3 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Provide general technical support to resolve moderately complex technical designs and operational problems using established engineering methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Review completed work for compliance with LLNL Design Safety Standards and ensure work meets overall project objectives.
- Prepare or propose specifications for various complex equipment apparatus or systems.
- Design, fabricate, and coordinate test set-ups and experiments in order to function-test the feasibility of preliminary designs.
- Build operational procedures for end users of fabricated systems.
- Routinely interact with program management and technical staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 533.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support to resolve complex technical designs and operational problems and propose alternatives utilizing common well understood problem solving methods.
- Independently design, prepare, and fabricate complex electro-mechanical/vacuum systems/equipment, set-up sophisticated diagnostic equipment, and perform experimental tests and operations.
- Independently solve complex mechanical and operational problems using industry standard drafting, design, and engineering programs; utilize general application programs on computer systems as tools to identify, evaluate, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches; produce support documentation and graphics.
- Associate’s (AA/AS) Degree in Mechanical Technology or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Demonstrated ability to operate machine tools for general parts fabrication.
- Intermediate knowledge of design, fabrication, and assembly of mechanical hardware and materials, techniques, and procedures.
- Experience with personal computers, including Microsoft Office Suite and mechanical design software.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to align with safety, ES&H, security, and business management policies and regulations.
In Addition at the 533.3 Level
- High level skills and experience in design, fabrication, and assembly of complex mechanical hardware and optical components.
- High level understanding of materials and manufacturing processes required in the solution of complex mechanical problems.
- Experience providing technical direction to others and leading a team.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
