For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an investigator in the Security Incidents Reporting Office (SIRO). You will assist higher-level investigators to organize, conduct and/or document investigations of alleged or suspected violations of regulations concerning protection of classified documents, sensitive information and materials, and to issue security infractions. Will interact with all levels of Laboratory personnel from a variety of disciplinary fields. This position is in the Security Organization.
- Evaluate procedures and apply established policies to identify violations of classified or sensitive materials and information.
- Assist higher-level investigators with planning, organizing and conducting investigations.
- Respond to incidents reported by employees or external entities, which may involve potential violations of DOE directives governing protection of classified or sensitive information and/or materials.
- Review Protective Force security incident reports to identify incidents requiring follow-up; determine and initiate appropriate action.
- Conduct follow-up inquiries of incidents, and prepare basic investigative reports to present and document investigative activities, findings and renderings to senior investigators and/or management.
- Conduct security indoctrination briefings with individuals involved in classified incidents and with others responsible for assuring proper handling of classified/sensitive information.
- Utilize and maintain database to track incidents of security concern, analyze data and identify trends.
- Present the SIRO to individuals receiving new clearances.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Participate as a controller during Security Organization performance tests.

- Bachelor’s degree in a security or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of DOE orders and regulations governing a variety of safeguards and security disciplines including, but not limited to, Incidents of Security Concern, Classified Matter Protection Control, Physical Security and Protective Force.
- Experience assisting with preliminary and follow-up investigations, and documenting findings. Demonstrated knowledge of evidence collection and preservation techniques. Experience exercising a high degree of discretion, sound judgment, and tact in handling sensitive issues.
- Experience collecting and analyzing raw data and synthesizing it into presentations, charts, graphs, spreadsheets and preparing investigative reports.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently recommend appropriate actions and develop solutions.
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to effectively present, direct, negotiate, influence and coordinate with all levels of management and staff internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Extensive experience with personal computers and database applications, as well as software to include MS Word, MS Excel, FileMaker Pro and Power Point.
- The successful candidate will be subject to a supplemental background check conducted by the Security Organization.  In addition, if the successful applicant holds a valid Q/L clearance that has not been reinvestigated in the previous 5 years, he/she will be subject to an update of the clearance by DOE.  Submission of an application for this position constitutes an agreement to the background check and DOE reinvestigation process.

- Knowledge of and accreditation in the use of the DOE SSIMS system.  Completion of the DOE Conduct of Inquiries training.  Completion of the DOE Legal Aspects of Inquiries training.
- Experience conducting training/indoctrination briefings on classified and/or sensitive issues associated with infractions.  Experience with root cause analysis.
- Training/experience as a Protective Force Division controller.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Active DOE Q clearance required at time of hire.  (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
