We have an opening for a Mechanical Technologist/Senior Mechanical Technologist. You will provide technical support for experimental research, prototype equipment development, installation, and commissioning primarily in RF accelerator technology for electron and ion beam production for nuclear science applications. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate, supporting the Accelerator Installation and Operations efforts for the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
This position will be filled at either the 533.2 or 533.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
- Provide general technical support to a wide variety of laboratory activities, including high and ultrahigh vacuum assemblies, radiation generating systems, electrical, camera, plumbing, and cooling systems.
- Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex mechanical components and systems, including planning, selecting materials, equipment, and defining solutions.
- Work from drawings and verbal/written instructions to assemble and test various mechanical designs.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and senior personnel to provide general technical support.
- Fabricate, assemble, and align diagnostics in accordance to specified requirements.
- Apply intermediate understanding of materials and manufacturing process in solution of moderately complex mechanical problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the 533.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support to a wide variety of laboratory experiments, including vacuum assemblies, x-ray systems, electrical, camera, handling explosive material, plumbing, and cooling systems.
- Acquire and analyze data and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex mechanical problems using individual creativity and judgement.
- Document assemblies and record each procedure for future experiments.
- Associate’s degree (AA/AS) in an engineering technology such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Intermediate understanding of machine tool technology and operation of conventional machine tools, inspection techniques, and materials and manufacture processes.
- Experience crafting moderately complex mechanical components or systems.
- Experience working with high vacuum systems and setting up experiments on large vacuum vessels.
- Demonstrated ability to work with others and multi-task assignments.
- Demonstrated ability to work from drawings and proficient using CAD software package (Solid Works or Pro E) to produce 3D models and generate 2D detail drawings for fabrication.
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills. High proficiency in engaging in institutional network communications including email, phone, instant messaging, and institutional calendar programs.
In Addition, at the 533.3 Level
- High level skills and experience working and aligning accelerator beamlines, CCD cameras, and working with high vacuum systems, setting up experiments on large vacuum vessels, and working with slightly radioactive material.
- Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication, feedback, and presentation skills.
- Experience planning large mechanical fabrication and assembly projects.
- Intermediate understanding and familiarity with radiation generating devices.
- Experience operating and maintaining a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment. Experience in CNC machining manufacturing processes.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.
