For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Nuclear Material Operations Group Leader (NMOGL). You will lead a group that conducts LLNL Nuclear Material Operations in Superblock and off-site for the Pit Surveillance Program. You will provide leadership of professional and technical personnel to identify, plan, and safely complete the milestones associated with programs that are supported. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate. DTED provides support to Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Programs.

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level. 

Essential Duties
- Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to staff working in nuclear facilities to ensure that programmatic milestones are safely met on schedule and within budget.
- Collaborate with project principals and customers to market group capabilities and to define programmatic objectives, budgets, and schedules.
- Review required engineering authorizations, specifications, drawings, and documents to ensure that nuclear facility safety requirements are met.
- Direct special assignment activities in support of Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Programs and DTED/WTE.
- Serve as a technical contact for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Foster staff development and participate in hiring activities.
- Perform performance management activities for group personnel and contribute to the DTED ranking and salary processes. Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables, and lead corrective actions where necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
- Serve as organization spokesperson by Laboratory management and/or external advisor by sponsors.
- Serve on external scientific or technical committees, representing the Laboratory.

- BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Demonstrated subject matter expert knowledge of plutonium operations, part fabrications and inspections.
- Subject matter expert level knowledge of and significant experience with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, and managing budgets.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
- Leadership and supervisory skills needed to effectively lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and actively participate in ranking sessions.
- Experience working independently and responsively to changing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with other external entities.
- Ability to become Associate Fissile Material Handler and HRP certified.
- Ability to travel frequently.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Demonstrated expert knowledge of pit surveillance requirements and required capabilities and of the Engineering Authorization system and the Technical Business Practices.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.
- Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge to address advancements that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.

Desired Qualifications
- MS / PhD in Mechanical or Engineering or a related field.
- Certified Fissile Material Handler and demonstrated knowledge of nuclear facility safety analysis and Unreviewed Safety Question processes.
- Significant experience with Nuclear Material operations at LLNL, Nevada National Security Site, or Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Active DOE Q clearance required at time of hire. (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
