For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.
We have multiple openings for a Sensor Integration Engineer to participate in new and ongoing projects developing embedded sensors for nuclear weapon systems. You will have technical responsibilities in developing technology solutions for obtaining data in testing and surveillance of weapon system components. Our engineers interface with colleagues at other National Laboratories and Production Agencies, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Department of Defense (DoD), and their contractors. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
- Perform research and development of activities with novel embedded sensor technologies.
- Design, plan, analyze, and conduct thermomechanical tests of structures using diagnostic systems.
- Independently define engineering requirements for structural, thermal, and diagnostic systems.
- Generate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.
- Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in formal engineering design reviews.
- Learn and support NNSA, institutional, and other quality assurance requirements and processes for state-of-health surveillance of the nuclear stockpile.
- Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to contribute to the fulfillment of various organizational projects and goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Contribute to and lead the development of sensor technologies in a broad range of fields from concept to application.
- Independently assess institutional needs and work with multidisciplinary team of researchers to develop technologies to address LLNL needs.
- Define and prioritize product development milestones and technology options based on organizational needs, both long-term and short-term.
- Master’s (MS) degree or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience in researching, developing, and implementing creative solutions to engineering problems.
- Experience in prototype development and testing, as well as hardware design and analysis.
- Comprehensive knowledge of engineering hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of two or more of the following: engineering hardware design, systems engineering, manufacturing techniques, testing processes, FEA structural analysis.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and demonstrated ability to perform independent work.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and mentor junior team members.
- Demonstrated ability and flexibility to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, explain technical information, interact and collaborate with other technical staff members in a team environment, and provide advice to management.
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices and their application.
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Security Clearance: This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
