We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to conduct research in age- and environment-related changes to the dynamic properties and structure of polymer materials. You will actively participate in the research to develop experimentally informed models that can predict such changes on the scale of decades. This position is in the Materials and Analytical Spectroscopy / Spectrometry group of the Materials Science Division.
- Investigate the kinetics and thermodynamics of the aging of elastomeric and other polymer systems, including systems which may or may not contain reinforcing fillers, and also of polymeric cellular foams.
- Develop mathematical models based on experimental data that allow for prediction of changes to polymer structure and material properties over many years, including estimations of statistical validity of the predictions (standard errors, confidence levels, etc.).
- Design and perform: time-temperature superposition studies of the chemical, structural, and dynamical properties under conditions of varying temperature, water content, and radiation exposure; and experiments to evaluate the rheological properties of polymers under various conditions.
- Conceive, design, and execute research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests, and interact with a wide spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in physical chemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering, polymer science or related field.
- Experience in kinetics and thermodynamics of solid-state reactions, phase changes, sorption-desorption processes, and diffusional processes.
- Understanding of the concepts of reaction kinetics and time-temperature superposition.
- Proven ability as a creative experimentalist, and a diverse range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.
- Demonstrated ability to independently develop and execute original research as indicated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected by effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Willingness and ability to self-direct and work independently, and to collaborate on multidisciplinary teams as required to reach research goals.
- Experience with MATLAB, COMSOL, or other modeling or simulation software.
- Experience in dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, polymer rheology, or structure determination from neutron scattering.
- Knowledge of isoconversional kinetic analysis, or polymer or glassformer physics.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
