We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of adaptive optics (AO) techniques, modeling, instrumentation, and control algorithms for application to imaging in highly scattering materials, including soils. You will participate in the modeling, design, building and application of an AO system for a two-photon microscopy system capable of multiple label-free imaging modalities (stimulated Raman microscopy, coherent Raman microscopy, photoluminescence, fluorescence lifetime microscopy, and second-generation harmonic microscopy). You will work directly with a team of highly experienced LLNL AO scientists and engineers. You will also collaborate with a team of two-photon microscopy and soil science experts to achieve our interdisciplinary goal of direct imaging of microbes and organic matter in soil. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.
- Analyze, report, and present AO modeling results.
- Participate in the design, integration and performance optimization of the AO system.
- Conduct image measurement and analysis.
- Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Maintain professional and institutional visibility through participation in conferences.
- Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in engineering with emphasis on adaptive optics or related field.
- Experience with adaptive optics techniques, modeling, instrumentation, and control algorithms.
- Experience with the operation and opto-mechanical performance of astronomical instruments.
- Experience in optical alignment.
- Experience in optical design software such as Zemax, CodeV, FRED, etc.
- Experience working on a research team with individuals from diverse technical backgrounds, as well as function as an independent researcher with a high level of attention to details.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical and scientific reports and publications, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature with experience presenting research results to a large audience.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the location of the assignment.
If you are selected and a security clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
