We have an opening for an X-Ray Diagnostic & Measurement Science (imaging) Group Leader to provide scientific and administrative leadership for a group of Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) and National Ignition Facility (NIF) scientists. You will coordinate group staffing, recruitment, research thrusts and resources to support the development of x-ray imaging techniques for High Energy Density (HED) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments. You will report directly to the Section Leader of the High Energy Density Physics Section. This position is in the Physics Division.
This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
- Provide leadership and technical guidance, including scientific and programmatic direction, to a diverse team of support personnel.
- Collaborate with Physics and programmatic management to ensure staffing needs are met and group members are available to fulfill assignments.
- Develop and maintain a close interaction with program managers as well as experimental, theoretical and modeling groups to ensure effective scientific support and teamwork.
- Lead efforts conducting independent research and developing novel modeling approaches.
- Develop new scientific programs and research proposals for Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) and external sponsors and funding agencies.
- Foster interactions with colleagues and institutions in both domestic and international high-pressure science communities, such as academia, industry and government institutions that advance strategic goals.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert and primary point of contact for communications between group members and senior management.
- Mentor technical staff to promote professional development, conduct staff and performance management activities in collaboration with Physics Division Management, including succession planning.
-Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the SEL.5 Level
- Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers and interact with programmatic sponsors within the Laboratory and with external funding agencies.
- Guide and provide strategic scientific and technical direction for advanced x-ray imaging and application projects, including LDRD and internally/externally funded activities.
- Provide solutions to highly complex problems in HED and ICF physics.
- PhD in physics or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience and subject matter expertise in high-speed x-ray detectors, and/or x-ray imaging techniques and their application at large-scale HED physics facilities.
- Expert leadership skills and experience supervising others in a technical environment.
- Expert written and verbal communication skills, specifically the ability to explain and present highly complex ideas, as well as to influence employees and all levels of management.
- Substantial experience in developing new scientific programs and research proposals for LDRD and external funding.
- Ability to delegate effectively and to lead, motivate, and build highly complex interdisciplinary teams to work towards programmatic and institutional goals.
- Experience working effectively as part of a management team. on behalf of the section, division, directorate, and Laboratory.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Nationally recognized expert in one or more areas of x-ray imaging and high-speed x-ray detector technology.
- Extensive experience and expert ability to apply, lead, and/or develop cutting-edge principles, methods, and technologies related to x-ray imaging at large-scale HED Physics facilities.
- Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction to a diverse group of scientists for projects with demonstrated expert level communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
- In depth knowledge of ICF and HED physics, and of one or more program government sponsors
- Familiarity with Physics Division and NIF personnel and projects.
- Knowledge of Laboratory management and structure, including supervision, budget, policies, and processes.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
